Do you work best in the middle of a busy scene or do you
need peace and quiet? Are you a minimalist or a lover of goods? Do you do your
best thinking while looking out the window or do you prefer to stand alone,
move things? Designing your home office with your settings and work style in
mind will help create the personal space that suits you with T.
See if one of these eight ideas for adjusting your
workspace does the trick for you.
If you like to move around: Give yourself several choices
of places to work in space - a traditional table along one wall can hold your
laptop, while a round table in the middle of the room is available to sit and
read, take notes or exchange ideas
If you like to be surrounded by busy activities: Do you
work best in cafes and other busy spaces? Then consider designing a workspace
that you can share with your children or housemates, or setting up a shop in
the kitchen where everyday life can flow around you. Be sure to make room for
the speaker, and turn on your favorite music or podcast while you work.
If something from a remote office-y makes you squirm:
There are no rules that say that you have to equip your home workspace with a
desk and desk chair. The dining table can be called a spacious table, and a
comfortable upright chair can be used as a desk chair, as long as you don't
record much time at the time.
If you do choose the right desk chair for ergonomic
reasons, there are still many ways to bring more home to your home office - try
comfortable carpets, colorful wallpapers, beautiful desk lamps, and beautiful
accessories.
If you are a fancier: Instead of fighting the tendency to
daydream, embrace it. Set your table in a place with a view - the top floor
looking out the window (but far enough away from the dazzling window is not a
problem) could be ideal. Or, place your table facing a large room, so that your
eyes have a place to go when you glance from your work. In a narrow space, try
hanging inspiration boards, wallpaper, artwork or mirrors, and use plants to
create a deep impression.
If you are a visual person: For visual-minded people
(myself included), keeping important material in view is a must. Try creating
your own giant calendar using chalk paint in different colors. Or create a
giant bulletin board where you can embed task lists, calendar items, and
inspiration. Be sure to limit what you do to what is truly essential, and edit
regularly - too much visual stimulation and it becomes difficult to focus.
If you are easily distracted: If the slightest noise or
activity makes you lose concentration, you need to cultivate personal space.
Try to fight over your own room if possible. If that can't be done, choose the
quietest room, the least used, and do what you can to protect your own angle.
The table shown here, with its default screen reminiscent
of the study carrel, is ideal for blocking distractions while you work. You can
also use a decorative folding screen or open-backed shelf to carve a workspace
in a larger room.
If you are a minimalist: Only a few pieces you need to
complete your workspace. Maybe a beautiful, direct-edge wooden table, as shown
here, will help inspire you to keep your space as clear as your minimalist
heart desires.
